Referral Process

Children and youth aged 0-19 years

The Ministry of Health has funded assessment services for FASD, Autism, and other Complex Developmental and Behavioural Conditions. The Asante Centre is contracted by the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) to provide a portion of the assessment services for residents in the Fraser Health Region of British Columbia. Physician referral to PHSAis required.

It will be up to PHSA whether your son or daughter's case is assigned to the Asante Centre and you should keep in close contact with them about assignment and wait times.

All referrals and intakes for both the Fraser and Vancouver Coastal Health Regions are centralized through Provincial Health Services Authority operating through Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children in East Vancouver.  While referrals are made to this location, scheduling of assessment appointments for families residing in the Fraser Region continues to be carried out by a variety of diagnostic teams located in that area, while families residing in the Vancouver Coastal Region will be served at Sunny Hill.

If you do not live in the Fraser or Vancouver Coastal Health Regions, please contact your local Health Authority for referral information.

Youth Justice FASD Program

Referrals are made by probation officers in Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Regions of BC only. Probation officers obtain guardian consent for the youth to participate. The program is funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

Private FASD assessments for children, youth, and adults

A referral to the Centre begins with a phone call from the legal guardian (i.e. birth or adoptive parent or social worker) in order that we can obtain some information about the client to ensure he or she is a candidate for assessment.  There is a fee for service for private assessment which will be discussed at that time, as there are various factors involved in choosing the appropriate assessment level (i.e. age, previous testing, Ministry involvement).

Individuals and families can contact the Asante Centre directly. A physician's referral is required and there is a fee-for-service.

A referral to the Centre begins with an approximately ½ hour long telephone interview with the legal guardian of the child or, if an adult, with the adult him or herself.  After confirmation that the client would indeed be a candidate to attend for an assessment, we would send out our New Client Information package for completion, approximately 20 pages of current and historical information, and records collection.
