FASD RESPITE GRANT

The Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) - in partnership with The Asante Centre and Carrier Sekani Family Services - distributed respite funding to support families with children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). This included children and youth without official diagnoses.

Grant details.

  • $3080/year for two years (for a total of $6160).

  • Respite funding can be used to purchase services and supports that best meet your family’s needs (respite care providers, overnight/sibling care, summer camps, community programs, recreational activities, groceries, cleaning assistance, etc.). There will be no follow up from partner organizations to verify how grant monies are spent.

  • 402 two-year grants are available.

  • Successful applicants will be selected by way of a randomized selection process.

Eligibility

Families must meet both of the below eligibility criteria in order to apply:

  • Families with children/youth 0-19 years of age

  • Application is on behalf of a child with FASD (or a child who is suspected to have FASD)

In order to serve families with the least access to respite, foster parents are not eligible for this funding.

The Asante Centre 2024 Next Cheque Issue Timeline:

  • March 4 to April 5, 2024: The successful 2023 grant winners will receive the last $3080 grant payment.

  • What if my child doesn’t have a formal FASD diagnosis?

You do not need a formal diagnosis to apply for this funding.

  • I have 2 or more children that have FASD or suspected FASD can I apply for each child?

No, this funding is available on a per-family basis.

  • We live in Alberta (or anywhere outside BC) but we’re FROM BC – can we still apply?

No, you need to currently be living in BC to apply for this funding.

  • Can I use this funding for emergencies, childcare, physio? Or treats? Etc.

    As a caregiver or family to a child experiencing FASD, you may use this funding at your discretion to determine what your family needs.

  • Does my application depend on how much we make as a household?

No – this funding is for anyone that needs it. Successful applicants will be drawn by a randomized selection process after the application processes are complete.

  • Will I need to send in reports on how I used the funding?

No reporting is required for this respite funding.

  • Do I need to save/send in receipts?

You do not need to save or submit receipts for this funding.

  • Is this respite funding taxable?

No, this grant does not have to be declared as income.

  • How will I be contacted if I’m selected?

Only the people that have been randomly selected will receive a phone call. We will contact you after March 20th, 2023 to verify payment information.

  • My child is currently 19 years old; do we still qualify for the respite grant?

      Yes, we accept applications for children that are 19 years old.

  • I am 19 years old, can I apply for the grant on behalf of myself.

    Yes, you can.
